Chris heads out at the back of the Signal

The last day of the ski season in Val d’Isere was a blissful, sun-kissed affair, with a couple of runs down the Vallonnets, a skim over the Combe du Signal, and an unmissable foray into Pays Desert once again. All under Chris’s masterful stewardship.  Continue reading “Vallonnets, 4 May 2014”

Making tracks in the Vallonnets

Fabulous morning’s skiing which started off in the Pays Desert before heading east to a remarkably little tracked Vallonnets area on the other side of the Signal.  Continue reading “Vallonnets, 1 May 2014”

The Mediterranean borders looking stunning this morning in the sun. Bonus track: planting a new tree with @annetouche in the south bed. ROLE REVERSAL - Black surface reflecting light and white absorbing it; gloss and matte; and raw-red beam pillars bursting upwards into the central space of the neo-deco staircase in the V&A Sainsbury Gallery A whole day of filling our eyes with plant wonderfulness at the Beth Chatto gardens yesterday. Feeling privileged to have snatched moments of exceptional peace before the gardens open, and at the end of the day after all visitors are gone. Different light, different atmosphere; as the garden wakes up in the morning, and as it looks forward to an overnight rest at the end of the day. Thank you to the brilliant @bethchattogardens team for making this such a special day, and especially to: head gardener Åsa Gregers-Warg for generously talking to us about what sustainable beauty means in practice, Marc for enthusing us about propagation, and Steve for being so willingly ambushed with hundreds of questions. BRILLIANT PLANT COMBINATIONS - cracking combo that has stood the test of time in Regent’s Park’s Italian Gardens, with fantastic complementary colours of lime greens, silvery greens and maroons; texture contrast with lacy foliage against broader coarser leaves; and moundy forms combined with fan-shaped ones to create a sedate rhythm. And right now, it’s all about foliage. Plants: Sambucus nigra Sutherland Gold, Euphorbia characias, Alstromeria, Hemerocallis, Sambucus nigra, Thalictrum, Macleaya, Hylotelephium. Pressing on with planting @annetouche‘s new scheme for the café in Queen Mary’s Gardens after @anna.rafal1 and @gardening.erin ‘s mega session yesterday. Nearly there. Keep your eyes peeled for pale apricot, pink and white. CACTUS PARTY - small but perfectly for formed tropical house in our walled garden at Capel Manor, Enfield. Astonishing array of forms and textures, of a different kind from temperate planting but equally varied. And the new growth on the Opuntia is just so tickly cute. Quick scoot around St John’s Lodge gardens to collect tomorrow’s ident plants. Blue haze over the forest floor as the bluebells are beginning to open at Nuneham Arboretum. Spring in the Mediterranean garden - a rush of green, lime and yellow, just as the irises kick in with their deep blue tones, starting off a wave of pinks and purples into early summer.
